The Devil in the Black Tarot
Voluntary chains, a deal paid for in yourself.
Portrait of the shadow
The Black Devil is more honest than the other shadows: he doesn't even pretend to be light. His power lies in voluntariness: the chains on his captives hang loose, the locks are open, and both parties know it. Why does nobody leave? Because the chain supplies what is terrifying to lose — the dose: of pleasure, money, drama, another's warmth — and relief from a freedom that frightens more than captivity. The card's shadow is a deal on instalments: you pay in yourself, a little at a time, unnoticed; the interest drips at night. He is not an enemy — he is a mirror of desires one is ashamed of, and so locked in a cellar where they went feral. The way out is not breaking the chain — it isn't locked — but admitting what you hold it for. A desire named aloud grows tame again: back into appetite, ambition, passion — what it was before the cellar.
The trap
Knows what harms — and arranges it at a discount. Calls addiction passion, control care, profit love.
The shadow in love and at work
In love: Holding onto each other like a dose; jealousy instead of closeness.
At work: Golden handcuffs: hates the job, but 'the pay is too good'.
The way out
Find the lock on your chain: it isn't locked. Check with your hand, not your eyes.
