Death in the Black Tarot
Clinging to the dead, horror of any ending.
Portrait of the shadow
Black Death is not the one that reaps but the one that won't let the scythe touch. This is the card of a person at war with endings: wearing out relationships like a coat three sizes too small, playing on in roles long outgrown, keeping on life support what would be kinder to release. The house is full of mummies labelled 'just in case'. The card's shadow is loyalty confused with necrosis: he believes he is preserving something alive, but preserves a shape life left long ago. The price is terrible and invisible: room. The new has nowhere to be born — everything is occupied by the unburied. The way out is ritual in the best sense: a funeral with honours. Thank the dead thing, name what it was — and let the earth close. Death allowed to do its work turns out to be a midwife.
The trap
Resuscitates relationships, projects and versions of self that stopped breathing long ago. Keeps everything: might come in handy. Doesn't bury — mummifies.
The shadow in love and at work
In love: Drags a relationship on out of pity for its past; the ending scarier than being alone.
At work: A zombie project eats the budget for years; closing it means 'admitting defeat'.
The way out
Choose one dead thing and bury it with honours: a thank-you — then earth.
