Sowilo is the sun — the lightning-stroke of it, the sailor's cliff-light in the old poem. Closing the storm-aett, it is victory after weather: energy, clarity, the wholeness of a person whose inside and outside finally agree. Not gentle light; the kind that decides things.

Sowilo powers up whatever it touches: health rallies, plans catch sun, the murky question resolves in one bright afternoon. It marks earned victory — the aett walked from hail to here — and demands one honest act: align. Sun-clarity exposes gaps between what you value and what you do; close one and the energy doubles. This is also simple permission: succeed visibly, tan and all.
In shadow — this rune has no reversed
No reversed — the sun is the sun. Its shadow is scorch: burnout by enthusiasm, glare that blinds instead of guides, victory laps that never end. Even this rune sets nightly; the confident do too.

What Sowilo means in the Elder Futhark
Sowilo is the sixteenth rune and closes Hagal’s aett. Its Proto-Germanic name is reconstructed as *sōwilō, the sun, and it stands for the sound s. Unlike several runes in this aett, it appears in all three rune poems, which makes its meaning one of the best attested.
- The Old English poem (sigel) describes the sun as a constant hope for seafarers crossing the sea until their ship brings them to land.
- The Norwegian poem (sól) calls it the light of the lands and speaks of bowing to what is holy.
- The Icelandic poem calls the sun the shield of the clouds, a shining ray and the destroyer of ice.
So the old images are guidance, warmth and the end of ice, which fits neatly after Hagalaz, Nauthiz and Isa earlier in the same aett. The modern focus on success and willpower builds on that, but the older core is simpler: light that shows the way home.

Sowilo has no reversal on this site; you read it upright or in its shadow. The test is temperature. If the energy warms you and lets you see further, you are in the upright reading. If it leaves you tired, overexposed or comparing yourself to someone brighter, you are in the shadow.
