Algiz is the elk-sedge, the splayed antler, the open hand raised — the great protection rune. It is defence with dignity: alert, not paranoid; guarding, not caging. Of all the row this is the one people carve first, and the one that asks the most adult question: protected for what?
Upright
Upright, Algiz raises the shield at the right moment: instincts sharp, allies near, the sense to step back from the wrong edge arriving exactly on time. It marks protected passage — a risky season crossed with cover — and blesses the protector role itself: the friend who walks you home, the clause you insisted on, the backup you actually made. Trust the prickle at your neck this week; it is on payroll.
Reversed
Reversed, the guard fails or overgrows: warnings ignored, trust misplaced — or armour so complete nothing warm gets through either. The hedgehog's dilemma is Algiz inverted: safe, and untouchable. Audit the defences: which still guard something, and which just guard the habit of guarding?
In love
In love, Algiz is the safety that intimacy stands on — and its overdose. Upright: you protect each other's soft parts; rare and priceless. Reversed: someone's shield is up mid-embrace. Vulnerability is the tax love charges; instalments are accepted.
In work and money
At work, it rules contracts, backups, insurance, the paper trail — unsexy shields that win lawsuits and sleep. Algiz also marks the guardian professions. Its counsel: build the defence before the storm quotes you a price.
A step that helps
Close one open vulnerability this week — the unsaved backup, the unsigned agreement, the unsaid boundary. Shields work best installed early.

What Algiz means in the Elder Futhark
Algiz is the fifteenth rune, in Hagal’s aett. Its Proto-Germanic name is reconstructed as *algiz (or *alhiz), usually understood as elk, and it stood for a z-sound that in practice turns up mostly at the ends of words.
The Old English rune poem calls it eolhx-secg, elk-sedge: a marsh grass that grows in water and cuts anyone who grabs it, staining the hand with blood. So the oldest description of protection here is a plant that defends itself simply by being sharp. The Norwegian and Icelandic poems have no verse for this rune by its old name; in the Younger Futhark its shape lived on, but as other letters with other names.
The modern meaning of guarding, shelter and a raised hand draws on the elk with its antlers, the sedge with its blades and the shape itself, which looks like an open hand or a figure reaching up. Much of that is later symbolism, built on a real old image.
Upright and reversed Algiz in everyday questions
A clear way to tell the two apart is to look at what the protection is for. Upright, it guards something alive that can still grow. Reversed, the guard has either dropped or become the whole point.
- In love: upright Algiz may ask whether your partner knows how to make you feel safe, specifically. Tell them; people cannot guard what they cannot see.
- At work: a good draw before you share an idea widely. Note who you tell first and what you put in writing.
- As rune of the day: pay attention to small warnings that come early, like a tired body or a vague doubt about a plan. Most are useful information.
How to work with Algiz
Journaling question: What do I protect out of love, and what do I protect out of habit?
A simple practice: stand up, lift both arms in a wide V like the rune, and breathe slowly for five breaths. Then lower them and name one thing in your life that deserves guarding this week, and one person who guards you.
Algiz in a three-rune spread
In a three-rune line, Algiz as ground means the situation rests on care someone took earlier. As weather, you are covered or need to be. As direction, the momentum favours caution that leaves room to move.
