Fehu ᚠ

Fehu is wealth on the hoof — the herd, not the vault. The first rune of the row is about resources that live and move: money, energy, talent, milk. Its oldest lesson is stamped right into the word: wealth needs tending, or it wanders off.
Upright
Drawn upright, Fehu says the resources are there or arriving — and asks what you are feeding. Income, opportunity, creative fuel: something in your pasture is fattening nicely. This is a rune of circulation rather than hoarding; it favours the person who invests, shares, and keeps the wealth moving like the living thing it is. A good draw for beginnings that need funding — of money or of nerve.
Reversed
Reversed, the herd is thinning: leaks, losses, energy spent faster than it returns. Sometimes it is literal money slipping; more often it is value unguarded — your time given free, your work underpriced, your battery lent to every passerby. The rune isn't scolding; it is pointing at the open gate.
In love
In love, Fehu asks about nourishment: is this bond fed, or only owned? Generosity is its language — of attention more than gifts. Reversed, watch for keeping score; a relationship run like a ledger starves on paper profits.
In work and money
At work, Fehu backs ventures, raises, launches — anywhere value visibly grows. Its advice is farmer-plain: count the herd honestly, cull what doesn't thrive, reinvest the cream. Reversed, audit the leaks before chasing new income.

What Fehu means in the Elder Futhark
Fehu is the first letter of the row, which is why the whole alphabet is called the futhark, after its opening sounds f-u-th-a-r-k. Its reconstructed Proto-Germanic name, *fehu, meant livestock, and the same root survives in English fee and German Vieh. In a farming world, cattle were money that ate, bred and could be driven off by raiders.
The Old English poem calls wealth a comfort to everyone, then adds that a person must share it freely if they want honour. The Norwegian and Icelandic poems are darker: wealth is a cause of strife between kinsmen, and the Icelandic verse calls gold by poetic names such as fire of the sea and path of the serpent. Modern readings hold both notes: abundance that blesses when it circulates and divides when it is hoarded.
Fehu upright or reversed: reading the nuance
Before deciding between the two pages of meaning, ask what kind of resource your question is really about. Fehu covers money, but just as often energy, time or reputation. If the rune is upright and you feel relief, read it as “the means exist”. Reversed, look for the specific gate that is open, not for general bad luck. Some modern writers call a reversed rune merkstave, “dark stave”; it is a useful word for a shadowed reading, not a curse.
- In love: a fine draw for a couple discussing shared money or who carries the household load.
- At work: a nudge to name a price, ask for the budget or invoice the thing you did “as a favour”.
- As rune of the day: notice one moment when something valuable flows to you and one when it flows out.
How to work with Fehu
Journaling question: where in my life am I rich but behaving as if I am poor, and where am I poor but behaving as if I am rich?
A small practice: for three evenings, write one line under two headings: “came in” and “went out”. Include non-money items: an hour of help, a compliment, a tired evening. On the third night, circle one outflow you would like to redirect. Fehu works well at the start of a month or a new budget, and some people draw it into a bind rune with Jera for patient growth.
