Upright
Dagaz announces the dawn: clarity arriving all at once, a long dark phase ending between one week and the next, the awakening after which the old confusion is simply unavailable. It marks safe passage through a threshold — moves, decisions, leaps taken at first light land well. Its energy is balanced extremes, dark and light held in one glyph: you get the breakthrough and keep the lessons the night taught. Act in the morning of things; that's when this rune holds doors.
In shadow — this rune has no reversed
No reversed — dawn is dawn from every angle. Its shadow is the snooze: light arrived, curtains held shut; the insight received and filed unopened because acting on it reorganises furniture. Dawn does not negotiate, but it can be wasted. Don't sleep through your own daybreak.

Dagaz in the Elder Futhark and the Old English poem
Dagaz is rune 23 on this site, the penultimate sign of Tyr's aett. Its Proto-Germanic name, *dagaz, means day — the ancestor of English day and German Tag. Early rune rows do not agree on the final order: some inscriptions place Dagaz last, others Othala, and modern books follow either. This site closes the row with Othala, so Dagaz stands just before the homestead.
Only the Old English rune poem describes it: day is the Lord's messenger, dear to people, the Creator's glorious light, a source of hope and joy to rich and poor alike, useful to all. The Norwegian and Icelandic poems omit Dagaz because the Younger Futhark dropped it. The poem's stress on light shared by everyone is worth keeping in mind: Dagaz is not a private triumph but a clearing that makes the whole field visible.
Dagaz has no reversal: reading its shadow
The butterfly shape reads the same from any side, so the question is upright or in shadow. A simple test: have I already seen the thing, and am I acting on it? Seen and moving — upright. Seen and postponed — shadow.
