The Hierophant in the Black Tarot
Tradition as a cudgel, 'the done thing' instead of the living thing.
Portrait of the shadow
The Black Hierophant once asked questions himself — that is why he was chosen to answer them. The questions ended there. He hands out ready-made meanings like rations: equal portions, by the list, with no regard for hunger. His shadow is not faith but fear of the emptiness that would open if a single 'done thing' were asked: done by whom? for what? for whose sake? He guards a staircase nobody has climbed in years and calls the guarding service. Near him it is shameful to be unlike the others — and shame is convenient: the ashamed don't leave. The way out is to reclaim the right to the first question. A tradition is alive while it is chosen anew; everything else is inertia in beautiful vestments.
The trap
Every living question gets a pre-shelved answer. Correctness has outranked truth, and the community's approval outranks conscience.
The shadow in love and at work
In love: Marriage by protocol; feelings audited against 'how it's done'.
At work: 'we've always done it this way' as strategy; the new dies in committee.
The way out
Ask yourself: 'do I want this, or is it required?' — and answer honestly.
