Berkana ᛒ
Berkana is the birch — first tree back after fire or frost, white-barked, unstoppable in a gentle way. It is the mother-rune of the row: birth and rebirth, growth that starts small and private, the nursery season of anything new. Where Tiwaz points, Berkana tends.
Upright
Upright, Berkana greens something: a project in its fragile first leaf, a recovery taking root, family news of the growing kind, a fresh start after cleared ground. Its counsel is a gardener's — protect the seedling stage, feed quietly, don't tug to check the roots. Things begun under this rune want gentleness and rhythm more than force; given both, birch outgrows oak's expectations.
Reversed
Reversed, growth falters or smothers: the new thing neglected at its neediest, or tended so anxiously it can't breathe — the overwatered pot, the hovered-over draft, the adult child still swaddled. It can also mark growth postponed for tidiness: waiting for perfect soil that never ships. Plant in the ground you have.
In love
In love, Berkana is the nesting note — homes made, families begun or repaired, tenderness as daily maintenance. It blesses new relationships with slow-growth patience. Reversed, care has turned to management; ask what the birch would do, which is mostly: stand near, and let grow.
In work and money
At work, it rules beginnings that need incubation — startups, trainees, drafts, gardens literal and organisational. Berkana managers grow people and are quietly worth double. Its warning: seedlings shown too early get critiqued to death. Protect the greenhouse phase.
A step that helps
Choose one young thing — habit, project, person's confidence — and commit to two weeks of quiet, uncritical watering. Then look.
The cat inspects the new kitten with vast reluctance, then washes its ears anyway: 'Growth happens. One supervises.'
Runes here are a mirror for reflection and a piece of living history — not a prediction and not a promise. For entertainment and thought.
