The honest paragraph
Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral in different outfits — corundum with chromium blushes, with iron-titanium turns sky; September and July are mineral siblings, which the trade whispers and we say aloud. The star in star sapphires is asterism, real optics; the destiny in them is yours to supply, as always.

Sapphire history and famous sources
Sri Lanka has produced sapphires for more than two thousand years and remains a key source. In the 1880s a landslide in the Kashmir Himalaya exposed sapphires of a velvety “cornflower” blue. The deposit was worked for only a few years, but “Kashmir” still sets the benchmark. Myanmar, Thailand, Australia, Madagascar and Montana in the US are also important. Among the most famous modern stones is the oval blue sapphire in the engagement ring given to Diana, Princess of Wales, and later to Catherine, Princess of Wales, the ring the page above alludes to.
Sapphire colours: not only blue
- Blue: from pale sky to deep royal and inky navy. Vivid, medium-dark blue is the most valued.
- Pink, yellow, green, purple, white: known as “fancy” sapphires, often cheaper than blue and great for personal style.
- Padparadscha: a rare, delicate pink-orange, named after the Sinhala word for the lotus flower.
- Colour-change sapphires: blue in daylight, purple under warm indoor light.

Any corundum that isn’t red is called sapphire, while red corundum is ruby, its July sibling.
How to choose a real sapphire and spot imitations
- Heating is the norm for sapphire and is generally accepted when disclosed. Unheated fine sapphires carry a significant premium and should come with a lab report.
- Diffusion treatment (for example with beryllium) adds colour from outside and lowers value considerably. It must be disclosed.
- Synthetic sapphire is real corundum and inexpensive. Flame-fusion stones may show curved colour bands under magnification.
- Imitations include blue glass, synthetic spinel, iolite and tanzanite (a lovely but softer stone).
- Doublets with a natural sapphire top on a synthetic base exist. Look for a join line from the side.
Sapphire care, gifts and symbolism
Like ruby, sapphire is 9 on the Mohs scale, tough and ideal for daily rings. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Untreated and heated stones usually tolerate ultrasonic cleaning, but fracture-filled or diffusion-treated stones should be cleaned gently by hand.

Are all sapphires blue?
No. Sapphire comes in almost every colour except red, which is called ruby. Pink, yellow, green and padparadscha sapphires are popular alternatives.
Is a heated sapphire fake?
No. Heating is a traditional, permanent treatment used on most sapphires. It should be disclosed and it affects price, but the stone is natural sapphire.
Is sapphire a good engagement stone?
Yes. At 9 on the Mohs scale it’s one of the most durable gems and has a long royal tradition in engagement rings.
Why is sapphire cheaper in pink or yellow than in blue?
Demand drives price. Blue is the classic and most sought-after colour, while fancy colours are less in demand, although fine padparadscha is an exception and can be very expensive.
