Burmese warriors reputedly inserted rubies under the skin for invincibility; Indian tradition ranked it above all gems; European lore said a ruby darkened to warn its owner of danger. The inner glow (fine rubies fluoresce red in sunlight) fed every legend about carried fire.

Rubies warn of nothing and armor no one — Burma's history settled that sadly well. But the fluorescence is real physics: chromium makes fine rubies literally glow in daylight, and 'carrying visible fire' is the rare folklore with a lab note.
