Pentacle ⛤
A five-pointed star drawn in one unbroken line, set inside a circle — one of the most misread symbols alive. Its keepers use it as an emblem of harmony and protection; its reputation was written mostly by people who feared it.
Where it comes from
The pentagram is genuinely ancient — Sumerian tablets, Pythagoreans (who saw mathematical perfection and the golden ratio in it and used it as a health sign), early Christians for the five wounds of Christ; in the medieval poem it's Sir Gawain's shield emblem of virtue. Modern Wicca ringed the star and made the pentacle its central symbol: the circle binding the whole. The sinister reading is recent — the inverted star acquired diabolic associations in the 19th century and stardom in the 20th-century satanic panics.
What it means
The five points read as the four classical elements — earth, air, fire, water — crowned by spirit, all held in the circle's unity: matter and soul in one continuous line. Hence its work as a protection symbol and a badge of balance. Orientation matters to practitioners: point-up is the standard harmonious form; the inverted version means different things in different traditions and mostly isn't what alarmed onlookers assume either.
How people use it today
Worn by Wiccans and many pagans exactly as a cross or a star of David is worn — a sign of faith; in 2007 the US approved it for veterans' headstones after a long campaign. It also guards jewellery boxes and book covers of people who simply like what it says: everything, held together.
A note of respect
This is a religious symbol whose wearers still field assumptions daily. The single most useful fact to carry: pentacle-wearers are, overwhelmingly, nature-revering pagans — the horror-film franchise is not their doing.
