Dreaming of cats
Purring on your dream sofa, feral in a dream alley, speaking (they do that, in dreams) — cat dreams carry whatever you personally have filed under 'cat', which makes them unusually honest mirrors: few animals split humanity so neatly.
What psychology sees
Common threads: independence — yours, missed or flourishing; intuition and the feminine (the cat's ancient portfolio); a relationship with graceful boundaries — or a person who only comes when they choose; and self-sufficiency you admire or resent. A neglected or starving dream cat frequently maps to your own instinct or creative side on rations. Cat lovers dream their cats as continuity; the cat-averse dream them as everything slippery. What the old dream-books said
Folklore split down the middle with enthusiasm: black cats as luck (Britain, Japan — the beckoning maneki-neko waves from this tradition) and as warning (much of Europe's dream-books, reading cats as deceit or a rival). Egyptian reverence sits underneath it all: an animal once literally divine keeps certain privileges in the collective basement.
When it's not symbolic at all
If a cat runs your household, residue claims most appearances — including the 3 a.m. parkour that writes itself into plots. New cat, neighbour's cat, one reel of kittens: booked. And a dream cat's yowling is sometimes an actual cat's yowling, incorporated live. Ours denies everything.
