Dreaming of birds
A single bird at the window, a wheeling flock, one ominous crow with opinions — bird dreams have carried the 'message' portfolio since augury was a government job, and the species tends to do the talking.
What psychology sees
Threads: freedom and perspective (the bird sees your maze from above — what would it report?), aspirations taking wing or caged, and news/communication — an association so old it's structural. Species matter personally: owls file under wisdom or warning, crows under intelligence and endings, doves under peace and love, eagles under ambition, songbirds under joy on a budget. A caged bird is the dream's least subtle image: name what sings in you behind bars.
What the old dream-books said
Entire ancient professions read birds; the dream-books inherited the habit. Doves meant love and reconciliation; crows and ravens, weighty news (grief in Europe's books, ancestors or omen-keeping in others); owls split by continent — wisdom to some, ill tidings to others; a bird entering the house, news crossing the threshold. Feathers found in dreams, small gifts or messages received.
When it's not symbolic at all
Dawn chorus writes itself into dream soundtracks nightly — a singing dream bird is often an actual one outside. Nesting season, a woodpecker's percussion, a documentary: booked. And city dreamers dreaming pigeons are running the most honest continuity of all.
