Candle Colour Meanings
Candle magic is Wicca's entry ritual for good reason: fire focuses attention like nothing cheaper. Colour adds a grammar — each shade a traditional shorthand for the work's intent. Here's the working palette; hold it as inherited poetry, not periodic table.
The palette
- White — all-purpose, cleansing, peace; the universal substitute when the "right" colour is missing (tradition itself says so).
- Black — banishing, endings, absorbing negativity; protective, not sinister.
- Red — passion, courage, vitality; the will's colour.
- Pink — self-love, friendship, gentle affection; red with the volume softened.
- Orange — creativity, encouragement, momentum after stagnation.
- Yellow — clarity, learning, communication; exam-season's candle.
- Green — growth, prosperity, healing, the garden's whole portfolio.
- Blue — calm, truth, restful sleep, smooth words.
- Purple — intuition, spiritual work, ambition of the deeper kind.
- Brown — grounding, home matters, animal friends, steady practical things.
- Silver & gold — Goddess and God, moon and sun, receptive and radiant.
Using the grammar
Choose the colour, hold the candle while stating the intention in your own plain words, light it, let it work while you do — journal, sit, or simply glance as it burns during an evening. Anointing with a drop of oil and carving a word into the wax are traditional amplifiers; your attention remains the actual engine.
The honest paragraph
Colour psychology is real but modest; wax pigments carry no verified powers. What the palette does superbly is encode your intention into a physical act — choosing green for growth makes the wish specific, visible and repeatable, which is exactly how attention becomes change. Poetry, working as designed.
The fire paragraph, unskippable
Never leave a burning candle unattended or sleep with one lit; keep flames away from curtains, cats and drafts; burn on stable heatproof surfaces; snuff rather than blow if you're traditional, but extinguish fully either way. No intention survives a smoke alarm — and the craft's first protection spell is a working one of those.
