What is clear quartz (rock crystal)?
Clear quartz, or rock crystal, is pure, colourless silicon dioxide — one of the most common minerals on Earth. It grows as six-sided prisms ending in a pointed tip, often in clusters, and may contain wispy “veils”, rainbows from tiny fractures, or inclusions of other minerals such as rutile or chlorite.
Famous sources include Arkansas in the United States, Brazil, Madagascar, the Alps and the Subpolar Urals in Russia. Its siblings on this shelf — amethyst, citrine, rose and smoky quartz — are the same mineral with different traces and histories.

How to tell quartz from glass, and keep it safe
- Quartz or glass? Quartz feels cold to the touch for longer; glass often shows round bubbles or swirl marks. Perfectly clear, inclusion-free spheres at a low price are usually glass.
- “Crystal” glassware such as lead crystal is glass, not quartz.
- A real sun hazard: a clear sphere or polished point in a sunny window can focus sunlight like a magnifying glass and scorch fabric or paper. Keep spheres out of direct sun.
- Cleaning: warm water and mild soap; dry thoroughly before storing.
A simple ritual: one stone, one intention
