Values Clarification

Values are the directions you steer by when nobody's grading — different from goals (a goal completes; a value continues) and from the inherited defaults installed by family and feeds. Clarifying yours takes an hour and repays it for years: decisions get lighter when the compass is legible.

The honest sort

Take a wide list — freedom, mastery, family, beauty, security, honesty, adventure, service, comfort, recognition, learning, loyalty, health, creativity, independence, belonging — and sort brutally into three piles: core (five at most), true but secondary, and inherited — things you've carried because someone expected it. The third pile is where the exercise earns its keep: most people find at least one 'value' that turns out to be a costume.

The evidence check

Now audit against reality, because stated values are cheap: where did last month's time, money and best energy actually go? A calendar is a values document with timestamps. Gaps between the claimed and the lived aren't shameful — they're the finding. Mark each core value: fully lived, partly, or on paper only.

From compass to decisions

Give each core value one behavioural sentence — not 'health' but 'I don't trade sleep for screens on weeknights'; not 'family' but 'Sunday calls happen'. Then use the compass at forks: the job, the move, the argument — which option feeds a core value, which merely flatters an inherited one? Revisit yearly; values evolve slower than moods and faster than we assume.

A quiet warning

Values talk can become another perfection project. The aim isn't a flawless alignment score; it's fewer decisions made on autopilot. Sixty percent lived, consciously, beats ninety percent claimed.

The cat's values audit is complete and consistent: warmth, food, sovereignty, you: 'Note how little I claim. Note how fully I live it.'

Journaling and reflection are lamps, not treatment. If material floods rather than opens — trauma, heavy grief, thoughts that scare you — please bring a professional into the room; that's wisdom, not failure.
