Moon Phase Compatibility Calculator

Compare the exact Sun–Moon phase angles and Moon signs at two births. The result describes similar, complementary or dynamically different lunar rhythms without inventing a “soulmate percentage.”

The viral Moon-phase trend, made honest

Overlaying two Moon images can make a pleasing circle, but geometry does not measure relationship quality. This calculator uses the actual phase-angle difference and explains the category. Similar angles can suggest a shared symbolic pace; opposite angles a complementary contrast; quarter turns a dynamic difference. None is automatically better.

Use noon when time is unknown, then compare morning and evening if a birth happened near a phase or sign boundary.

The eight birth Moon phases and what each says about you

Your birth phase is simply the angle between the Sun and the Moon at the moment you were born. Astrologer Dane Rudhyar read that angle as an inborn tempo: some people are natural starters, some are builders, some are finishers. Each phase covers 45° of the 360° cycle:

Treat this as a tendency rather than a full portrait: the same phase feels different in a Fire or Water Moon sign, which is why the calculator shows both.

Waxing and waning people: the simplest split

If you were born between New and Full Moon, you are a waxing person: energy flows outward, you learn by doing and you often initiate — the trip, the move, the first "I love you". Your weak spot is impatience.

If you were born between Full and the next New Moon, you are a waning person: energy flows towards meaning, you digest experience and know when to let go. Your weak spot is caution that can read as coldness.

One of each gives a couple a natural division of roles: one brings ideas, the other tests them. Two waxing partners live a full life but forget to rest; two waning partners understand each other without words but may postpone decisions too long.

How to read your result as a couple

Remember: the phase gap describes rhythm, not love. A "tricky" quarter can be happier than an identical pair if both people negotiate well.

Moon phase vs Moon sign — and what to check next

These are often confused. Your Moon sign is the zodiac sector the Moon occupied and describes your emotional style — what soothes and delights you. Your phase is the Sun–Moon angle and describes your tempo through life's cycles. Two people with the Moon in Cancer can be born at New and Full Moon: both are home-loving, but one processes feelings privately while the other needs to talk them through.

Frequently asked questions

Is the result calculated from a real ephemeris?

Yes. Planetary longitudes and angles use the vendored Astronomy Engine ephemeris in the tropical zodiac.

Is this a scientific personality test?

No. The position is astronomical; the personal interpretation is an astrological tradition offered for reflection.

Which Moon phase combination is best for a couple?

None is objectively best. Similar phases share a pace, opposite phases complement each other and a quarter gives lively friction; what matters is how you agree on your rhythms.

What does it mean if we were born in the same Moon phase?

Symbolically you share a life rhythm: you start, develop and finish things in a similar way. It feels easy, but make sure someone provides a counterweight, such as rest or new experiences.

Are New Moon and Full Moon people compatible?

They form the classic mirror pair: one acts on inner impulse, the other is oriented to relationship and response. They complement each other well when the first explains decisions and the second gives space.

How do I find out which Moon phase I was born in?

Enter your birth date, time and UTC offset in the form above or on the lunar birthday page. If you don't know the time, use noon; the phase changes roughly every 3.7 days, so errors happen only near a boundary.
