Dreaming of an old friend

Someone you haven't thought of in a decade pulls up a chair in your dream and it's instantly, achingly normal. Old-friend dreams are time capsules with legs — and what they carry is usually labelled with that era's name.

What psychology sees

The friend often arrives as an ambassador of who-you-were-then: the dream may be pulling that era's file because current life rhymes with it — its freedoms, its troubles, its unlived options. Other threads: a quality that friend embodied (courage, mischief, ease) that you currently miss in yourself; unresolved endings, if the friendship broke rather than faded; and simple social hunger — these dreams cluster in lonely or transitional seasons, the psyche staffing the table from the archives.

What the old dream-books said

Dream-books read meeting old friends warmly as good news or reunions coming, and quarrelling with them as inverse warnings about current allies. Several traditions read any vivid visitor from the past as the past itself requesting settlement — an account open somewhere. The internet-era folk read ('they're thinking of you') remains, as with exes, unfalsifiable and unhelpful.

When it's not symbolic at all

Residue is a shameless matchmaker: one memories-app photo, a mutual's post, a song from that summer, a reunion invitation — booked. If the friend has died, such dreams are common grief-visitations, frequently gentle, and count as memorial rather than message. And sometimes the reading is an instruction disguised as nostalgia: you could, in fact, just text them.

Three questions for your journal

The cat greets the returning traveller after a year as if it were Tuesday: "Real bonds don't expire. They nap."

A dream means what it means to you — you were there, we weren't. These pages collect the common threads, for reflection and entertainment, never as prophecy. If nightmares regularly wreck your sleep, that's worth a professional's ear: not because anything is broken, but because sleep matters.
